Northern Futures was a new initiative from the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, which was announced in July 2014. The proposal was for civic leaders, businesses, opinion makers and the general public across the North to come forward with ideas on how to create a vibrant Northern hub so it could compete with the biggest cities around the world.
