Former Admiralty Reference: Trinity House 17 March 1913 - Trinity House Flags as to the correctness of design shown in the Admiralty Flag Book.
Folios 1-2: file reference NS3447/1913 letter from Mr Ellis, Superintendent of Publications at H.M. Stationery Office, dated 17 March 1913 to Mr Northam. The official sale agents, Messers Wyman & Sons Ltd, have received a communication from a client stating that there is an error on page 28 of the September 1907 edition of Flags of all nations in reference to the Trinity House flags. The sailing ship in the designs shown officially on this page should be turned the reverse way. Seeks advice on the matter. Enclosure colour tracing of the Trinity House flags in question, (folio 2).
Folio 3: file reference NS3447/1913 letter from the Admiralty, dated 8 April 1913, to the Secretary, Trinity House, Tower Hill, asking opinion as to whether the Trinity House flags appearing in the Admiralty Flag Book are incorrect.
Folio 4: file reference L1124/1913 Trinity House's acknowledgement dated 9 April 1913 of the letter mentioned in folio 3.
Folios 5-8: file reference L1124/1913 Letter from Trinity House, dated 15 July 1913, to the Admiralty, confirming that the ships in the drawings (see folio 2) are in shown in reverse and encloses colour sheets (folios 7-8) showing the correct design for the Trinity House flags.
Folio 9: Letter from Mr Ellis, H.M. Stationery Office, dated 8 August 1913, to Mr Northam, requesting a reply to the matter raised in his letter of 17 March, (see folios 1-2).
Folio 10: file reference NL14620/1913 note to the Director of Stores dated 20 June 1914 asking whether the ships, water, etc, on the Trinity Flags should be coloured similarly to those at present in the Flag Book.
Folio 11: file reference NL14620/1913 letter from the Superintendent of Publications, H.M. Stationery Office, dated 16 August 1913, respecting the error on page 28 of the 1907 edition of Flags of all Nations. Has received confirmation from Trinity House that the heads of the ships in the Trinity House flags should be pointing towards the mast. A correct design has now been received from Trinity House and arrangements will be made to amend the book in the next errata.
Folio 12: file reference NL14620/1913 letter sent from the Admiralty to the Secretary of Trinity House dated 25 June 1914 enquiring whether the colouring of the ships, water, etc, on these flags as at present shown in the Admiralty Flag Book requires any alteration.
Folio 13: file reference L1942/1914 Trinity House's acknowledgement dated 25 Junel 1914 of the letter mentioned in folio 12.
Folio 14: file reference NL14620/1914 draft letter from the Admiralty to Trinity House enquiring whether a reply can be made to the letter dated 25 June 1914 (see folio 12).
Folio 15: Comments about Trinity House Flags, dated 21 April 1914, please obtain 6 proofs of the accompanying sketch for inclusion in Flag Book Errata 6, and 24 February 1915, the water should be coloured similarly to that already in Flag Book but as heraldically it is to be depicyed as 'proper' the painter has licence to colour it blue or green. Proofs returned herewith for revision.
Folios 16-25: file reference NL15852/1915 Design of Trinity House Flags shown in the Admiralty Flag Book.
Folio 17: file reference L1942/1914 letter from H. G. Willett, Trinity House, London. With reference to the letter dated 25 June 1914 (see folio 12) that as regards the water shown on the Flags, in the certified copy of the Arms it is coloured blue, but as heraldically it is to be dipicted as 'proper' the painter has licence to colour it blue or green. The colouring of the ships on the Flags is quite correct, but I am to draw attention to the letter from this House dated 22 November 1905 L4054, which states that the ships in the flags should be depicted with their bows pointing towards the flagstaff.
Folios 18-25: Memorandum dated 27 February 1915 by James Northam, Keeper of Stationery and Printing, Admiralty, Whitehall to Messers Malby & Sons, with reference to the demand (P334 dated 22 April 1915) proof of the plate for errate number 6 of the Flag Book is returned herewith. The water should be coloured to that already in the Flag Book but as heraldically it is to be depicted as 'proper' the painter has licence to colour it blue or green. Please supply further proofs. Six coloured proofs present in folios 20-25.
