Letter dated 23 July 1846 by H. G. Ward concerning a Board of Ordnance contract to send guns and carronades to Canada with the view of establishing a sufficient naval force on the Lakes of Canada and whether owing to the changes taken place between this country and America this contract could be suspended.
Letter dated 5 August 1846 from Downing Street. Earl Grey does not consider it expedient to proceed with the completion of the naval armament which was ordered in February last for Canada and consequently whatever has not been sent should be withheld. Earl Grey also of the opinion to suspend the contract entered into by Lord Cathcart on behalf of Her Majestys Government with Mr Sutherland for the building of steam vessels on Lake Ontario. Details of ships being built are provided.
Letter dated 8 August 1846 by H. G. Ward. Any arrangements concerning the building of iron steam vessels will have to be made with Mr Sutherland in Canada.
