This journal started in 1896 as "Moore's Monthly Magazine", was re-named "The Locomotive Magazine" in January 1897 and became "The Locomotive Magazine and Railway Carriage and Wagon Review" in 1903. It was published experimentally (in 1903 only) as a weekly magazine, otherwise it always appeared monthly. The Locomotive Publishing Company was taken over by Ian Allan Ltd., in October 1956 and the magazine was afterwards incorporated in "Trains Illustrated" which became "Modern Railways" in 1962.
