Description

Envelope mounted on reverse of card divider item 64 with typed caption, 'LNER [London and North Eastern Railway] No 2402 'City of York', 2403 'City of Durham', 2404 'City of Ripon'' containing photographic images of these [former North Eastern Railway Raven Pacific] 4-6-2 locomotives [designated Class A2 by the LNER]:

1) Monochrome postcard with manuscript number H551 on reverse, locomotive No 2403 alongside [Gresley A1 Pacific] No 2571 'Sunstar' [at Haymarket Locomotive Depot Edinburgh] [image c.1928-1930], 9cm x 14cm.

2) Monochrome postcard with manuscript message dated 23 January 1929 on reverse, locomotive No 2404 in works photographic grey LNER livery [image 1924], 7cm x 14cm.

3) Monochrome postcard published in the Regent Series No 1150 with printed caption on front, 'The 'City of York' LNER Pacific Type Locomotive' and further brief details on reverse, '...one of the last [locomotives] designed by Sir Vincent Raven for the North Eastern Railway just prior to its absorption in the LNER...', showing the locomotive in LNER [first standard grass green express passenger] livery [image 1924], 9cm x 14cm.

4) Colour postcard published by Locomotive Publishing Company, reproduction of a colour painting with printed caption on reverse, 'A Comparison - 'Locomotion' No 1 Stockton and Darlington Railway built 1825, No 2402 'City of York' London and North Eastern Railway built at Darlington 1922 [sic, in fact 1924]' [image c.1925], 9cm x 14cm.

5) Cutting [from 'The Railway Magazine'] undated, monochrome photographic image with printed caption underneath, 'London-Newcastle Express Near York, 4-6-2 No 2403 'City of Durham'', photograph by [C J L Romanes] [image c.1930-1932].
