Description

Envelope mounted on card divider item 64 with typed caption, 'Nos 2400-2401 later [in 1924] named 'City of Newcastle' and 'City of Kingston-upon-Hull' [respectively]' containing photographic images of these [North Eastern Railway Raven Pacific] 4-6-2 locomotives [designated Class A2 by the London and North Eastern Railway], see also item 65:

1) Cutting from unknown source [dated 1923], monochrome photographic image with printed caption underneath, 'NER [North Eastern Railway] Pacific Type Locomotive No 2400 On The 5.40pm Ex King's Cross June 29th [1923]' [still in NER livery with former NER dynamometer car No 3591 just visible as the first vehicle in the train and with a pyrometer gauge and steam circulating valve visible on the locomotive firebox because this one of the test runs to compare the Raven and Gresley Pacific locomotives], photograph by W J Reynolds, see also item 65/6.

2) Cutting [from 'The Railway Magazine'] undated, monochrome photographic image with printed caption underneath, 'London-Edinburgh Express Leaving York, North Eastern Section 4-6-2 Locomotive No 2401 'City of [Kingston-upon-]Hull'' with a train of mostly clerestory-roofed [East Coast Joint Stock] coaches, photograph by H Gordon Tidey [image c.1923-1925].

3) Colour postcard published in the Valentine's Valesque Series with printed caption on front, 'LNER [London and North Eastern Railway] North Eastern Section Pacific Type Express', Locomotive No 2400, reproduction of a colour print [image c.1923], 9cm x 14cm.

4) Monochrome postcard published by Locomotive Publishing Company in 'The Locomotive Magazine' series No Q46, locomotive No 2400 in works photographic grey livery [when new at Stooperdale Works, Darlington, County Durham] [image December 1922], 9cm x 14cm.

5) Monochrome postcard published by C L Turner, locomotive No 2400 [with a pyrometer gauge and steam circulating valve fitted on the firebox at the time of its comparative tests with the Gresley Pacific locomotives ] [image c.June-July 1923], 9cm x 14cm.
