This series consists of several series of Geographical Section, General Staff (GSGS) maps showing the military grids used before and during the Second World War overprinted on Ordnance Survey maps. Military grid were similar in form to the National Grid but followed a different (and, for the duration of the War, secret) numeration. These are the grid references commonly cited in operational record books, war diaries and other operational records of the period. The War Revision Military Grid was overprinted in purple (which is why the term 'Purple Grid' is often applied to military grids) and the Second War Revision in black.
