Description

This series contains plans and drawings for a wide range of buildings of educational and research institutions, museums and galleries, for which the Office of Works and its successors undertook construction, alteration and maintenance work. All were concerned with aspects of the arts or sciences, or both.

Some but by no means all the institutions whose buildings are covered by this series came under the Science and Art Department and its successors within the Education Department, notably the South Kensington Museum and its successors the Victoria and Albert Museum and the and Science Museum. The series also contains drawings relating to work undertaken for other national museums and galleries, among them the British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum and Tate Gallery.
