Description
(What the record is about)
-
This series contains correspondence and papers relating to ancient monuments and historic buildings, on subjects including repair works and maintenance, acquisitions and taking into guardianship and details of archaeological excavations.
The majority of the files were registered in the AA series, with some relating to historic buildings in the AE series, but some earlier papers are in unregistered folders. Some files date from after the creation of the Department of the Environment and the Property Services Agency.
A few early files relate to Welsh sites.

The Ordnance Board was created within the War Office, from the Board of Ordnance in 1855. It consisted of a committee of munitions experts, whosepurpose was to advise the newly-formed Army Council on the safety and approvalof weapons. The registered files for ancient monuments and historic buildingswere held within the war office under various sub-departments until its transfer to the Department of the Environment, and later to DCMS where the file series was continued.
