Description

Prisoner name: Felix Hanlon (or Felix O'Hanlon).

Prisoner age: 32.

Prisoner occupation: Seller of Irish linens by commission.

Court and date of trial: Hampshire Lent Assizes, February 1836.

Crime: Robbing James Sanders of money, a watch and a pair of shoes on the highway near Farnham, on 28 May 1835, together with four others.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character etc bad.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Felix O'Hanlon (or Felix Hanlon), the prisoner, the first undersigned by John White of Armagh and Down, testifying to his good character in that neighbourhood.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is innocent as he has an alibi for the time of the robbery; he had no means of producing witnesses at his trial; he was convicted on the sole evidence of the prosecutor; a fellow convict, James Simcoe, will swear to his innocence.

Other papers: Certificate from John Collins, Derrybeg, near Newry, the prisoner's former employer, testifying to his honesty, undersigned by two inhabitants of Killevey. Covering letter for third petition.

Additional Information: Prisoner from Deburrin Whalleys Division, parish of Killevey Lower, County Armagh, Ireland. Held in Winchester gaol then ordered to Leviathan hulk, Portsmouth. On board Sarah convict ship at Spithead.
