Description

Prisoner name: Bartholomew Hough.

Prisoner age: 42 or 44.

Prisoner occupation: Stocking framework knitter.

Court and date of trial: Leicester Lent Assizes, 19 March 1836.

Crime: Stealing from a dwelling house a gun, property of William Palmer of Thorpe Acre, together with William Porter.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Received a good character on his trial. Married with five children.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Penitentiary 7 May 1836. Sentence reduced to seven years.

Petitioner(s): E T M Phillipps, minister of Dishley and Thorpe Acre, and 78 inhabitants of Thorpe Acre and Knight Thorpe, Leicestershire, including William Palmer, the prosecutor. W Dewes of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has a wife and family dependant on him; although addicted to drink he is honest and a hard worker; he had no part in pawning the gun or in sharing the proceeds of the crime; the jury ignored the judge's direction to distinguish between the evidence against the prisoner and that of his drunken companion.

Other papers: Extracts from three letters from the Reverend E T M Phillipps, minister of Dishley and Thorpe Acre, in favour of commutation of sentence of the prisoner. Covering letter for second petition from Lord Hastings, Donington Park.

Additional Information: Prisoner from Thorpe Acre, Leicestershire. On board Justitia hulk; transferred to Millbank Penitentiary.
