Description

Prisoner name: William Hawkins.

Prisoner age: 17 or 18.

Prisoner occupation: Agricultural servant.

Court and date of trial: Wiltshire Lent Assizes, Salisbury, March 1836.

Crime: Highway robbery on James Dunsden (or James Dunsdon).

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character not known.

Petitioner(s): 25 inhabitants of Corsham, Wiltshire, with certificate from William Hulbert and Robert Hulbert, the prisoner's employers, stating that they will employ him again. James Dunsdon of Gastard, Corsham, yeoman, the prosecutor. Two petitions from Anne Barnet (or Ann Barnett) of Linleys, Corsham, widow, the prisoner's mother.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is young and of good character; this is his first offence; his former employers will take him back; he was induced by threats from Harry Waite to commit the crime; he offered no violence; he is the main support of his mother and two young half-siblings.

Other papers: Covering letter for Anne Barnet's second petition from Sir Hubert Taylor, St James's Palace.

Additional Information: Prisoner ordered to Leviathan hulk, Portsmouth. Committed crime with Harry Waite.
