The methods of keeping the register have varied, but since the outbreak of the First World War have relied on extracts from the London Gazette pasted into specially made volumes.
The announcements relating to the First World War have been taken from 'advance copies' of the London Gazette and contain some information on units which was removed for security reasons before publication. Manuscript annotations record, in a large number of cases between 1914 and 1918, the date and place of the action for which the award was made.
Please Note: Some Gazettes also include entries for awards of Victoria Cross.

In common with those for other decorations intended primarily for award to the land forces, the royal warrant for the Distinguished Conduct Medal, instituted in 1854, requires that a register of those upon whom the award is conferred shall be kept in the office of the Secretary of State for War. The duty of maintaining the register has fallen, at least during and since the First World War, to the Military Secretary's Honours and Awards Branch (MS3, later MSlb).
