At the time of its cession to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in July 1713 Gibraltar was already a military fortress. Under the British the original Moorish twelfth century walled town developed into a fortress encompassing a modern naval base of world importance, with attendant garrison, coastal and underground defences and, more recently, sophisticated anti-aircraft systems.
