Administrative / biographical background

Reports on the Accounts of Army Expenditure had been produced as 'A' or 'B' papers until 1938, after which they appeared as ordinary reports; this series contains the reports for 1939/1940 to 1955/1956.

In 1959 these reports were slightly modified and re-named as The Novel: Reports on Events Affecting Permanent Under-Secretary of State's Department; they were published between 1959 and 1963 and covered events between 1956/1957 and 1959/1960. Production of The Novel was discontinued in 1963.
