Description

Folio(s) 151-153. Letter from [the Reverend Alexander Bunn Haden], Bilston [Staffordshire], reporting that the meeting of inhabitants called in Wolverhampton, ostensibly to petition the king to negotiate peace, had intended to go further and call for the dismissal of the Government. The notice being defective, the meeting had not taken place. However Haden points out that there are 100,000 people in that area who are ready to listen to those who would 'alienate their Affections from their King and Constitution'. Three of the requisitionists of the meeting had been in the Volunteer Association of Infantry, and the captain commandant shared their views. Haden will immediately report any further attempt to convene such a meeting.

Enclosed is a printed notice dated 15 December 1800 protesting at the intended petition to the Crown for a dishonourable peace. Sir John Wrottesley can give information on the status of the signatories if required.
