Folios 459-462.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: J Uppington, Victoria Place, Stapleton, Bristol [Gloucestershire].
Letter enclosing a petition from certain land holders and tenants of Berkley, St Lawrence Hill, in the parish of St George, calling attention to the want of proper means of sewerage in that place. The petitioners explains that the only means they have for carrying refuse off is cesspools and that several deaths have recently occurred within their street - 'doubtless owing to the unhealthy state of the street, it being inundated and the refuse flowing into the under parts of the houses'. They explain that they have made repeated applications to the local Sewer Authority, as well as the Local Board of Health for Bristol, but have not been able to succeed in getting the street sewered by either of them, despite their paying a sewerage rate.
