Description

Folios 447-448.

To: The Local Government Act Office.

From: Josiah Pople, Chairman of the Sewer Authority, St George [Gloucestershire].

Copy of a letter addressed to J G Heavens, Clerk to the Local Board of Health for the borough of Bristol. Pople explains that the Sewer Authority for the parish of St George is desirous of covering a certain open drain located in a part of their parish, known as 'Frogmarsh Drain'. He explains that after leaving St George's boundary the drain in question traverses a part of the contiguous or Eastern boundary of the parish of St Philip and Jacob (where it 'becomes a much worse nuisance') and ultimately empties itself into the River Frome. Pople suggests joining the drain with a sewer belonging to the Bristol Local Board which runs parallel with the old open course. He notes that 'a large portion of the sewage conveyed by the Frogmarsh drain is derived from houses situate within the City - namely John Street' - and that on a recent inspection of that part of the course by a Committee of the St George Sewer Authority, 'the tenants of the houses adjacent complained that their health suffered from its effluvia, and they entreated the Committee to call the attention of the City Authority to the matter'.
