Description

Folios 481-482.

To: The Home Secretary.

From: John Irwin, Clerk to the Local Board of Health, Denton [Lancashire].

Letter stating in reply to a letter dated 7 March 1864 that the Denton Local Board 'objects to comply with the request of the Wardens on two grounds, either of which they believe will justify the course they have taken'. Irwin explains that the Board is of the opinion that the present drainage of the graveyard of Christ Church is sufficient - 'a drain passes through a portion of the yard at a depth of ten feet, and the outlet beyond the boundary of the graveyard is low enough to receive and carry off the drainage'. He adds that the drain has been 'two or three times stopped, through the neglect of the wardens, causing much damage to the grounds of Mr Thomas Baxendell, the occupier of the adjoining property'. The cause of the obstruction to the drainage, which is said to be known to the Wardens, is a willow tree that grows near to the drain, which 'strikes its roots into it, filling the entire area, and preventing the passage of water'. The Board are said to further object to complying with the request of the Wardens because the parish of Christ Church is an independent parish formed within a boundary comprising portions of the two townships of Denton and Haughton. Irwin requests copies of the Churchwardens' letters to the Local Government Act Office on the subject in question.
