Description

Folios 478-479.

To: The Local Government Act Office.

From: Joseph Taylor and William Fox, Churchwardens of the New Parish of Christ Church, Denton [Lancashire].

Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 29 February 1864. They state in reply that Sunday night and Monday 'were wet - very wet', and that the effect on the new graveyard at Christ Church was 'deplorable', in consequence of it having no outlet for drainage. It is explained that two men were only just able to get a coffin into a grave, 'in a puddle of water, two feet higher than it ought to have been, after keeping the mourners and the Rector waiting, in a pouring rain, an hour and a half'. They state that 'the whole thing was disgusting'. Taylor and Fox call the attention of the Home Secretary to this occurrence, 'with the simple expression of our opinion that those who are rated by the Local Board ought not to be so treated'. They add that 'several worse cases have occurred' and that 'once the corpse remained all night, and a fresh grave had to be dug'.
