[1864 Feb]
Folios 472-477.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: Joseph Taylor and William Fox, Churchwardens of the New Parish of Christ Church, Denton [Lancashire].
Letter advising that the Denton Local Board of Health has adopted a plan of public sewerage which is said to leave the graveyard of Christ Church without any outlet for its drainage. They enclose a rough plan of the locality, 'showing the true nature of the required outlet for the drainage of Christ Church Burial Ground, in Denton'. Taylor and Fox explain that they submitted a proposal to the Local Board for such an outlet to be formed 'by the bringing up of a short sewer from their present mains to the back fence of the Burial Ground, or otherwise at their discretion'. They enclose a copy of the response they received from John Irwin, Clerk to the Denton Local Board, in which he declares that the Board 'has no power to expend its funds for the purpose required'. Taylor and Fox contest the correctness of this declaration. They conclude that in future years, if the graveyard remains undrained, the place will 'become offensive to the health of a population rapidly increasing around it' and that 'no power exists to give us the required outlet, except in the Local Board of Health'.
