Description

Captured ship: Samson or Sampson of La Rochelle (master Joseph Pievost).

History: a French ship (200 tons, 8 guns, 26 men), bound from Saint Domingue to La Rochelle, laden with sugar, indigo and coffee; taken on 25 July / 5 August 1744 in latitude 45°N by the privateer Tuscany of Bristol (Edward Nicholas commanding), and brought into Bristol.

  • [CP 4]: allegation, brought into court September 1744;
  • [CP 5-CP 5d]: allegation with 4 exhibits annexed: advertisments and copies of letters, brought into court 1 December 1744;
  • [CP 6-CP 9]: allegation with commission, 2 examinations conducted at Bristol in response to the allegation, commissioners' affidavit, brought into court 5/16 March 1747;
  • [CP 10-CP CP 13]: allegation with commission, 2 examinations conducted at Poole in response to the allegation, attestation, commissioners' affidavit, brought into court, 23 October 1747;
  • [CP 14-CP 15]: 2 declarations by crewmembers relating to the issuing of a letter of marque, brought into court 12 November 1747;
  • [CP 16]: warrant of prohibition, brought into court 8 June 1748;
  • [CP 17-CP 18]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 27 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 27, including bills of lading, customs papers, ship's pass, muster roll.
