Description

Captured ship: De Providentia (Proviendentia) of Bergen (master Hans Lorens Fester otherwise Hans Lorentzen Fester).

History: a Danish ship (80 tons, 6 guns, 10 men), bound from Stockholm to Le Havre, laden with pitch, tar, deals, paving stones and guns; taken on 7/18 November 1747 off Cape d'Antifer by the privateer Hawk (Thomas Holman commanding), and brought into Rye.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 7]: attestation and claim;
  • [CP 8-CP 12]: attestation of seven people relating to the ship's cargo and tackle;
  • [CP 13-CP 14]: attestations of four people relating to the ship's guns and cargo;
  • [CP 15-CP 16]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 5 ship's papers (two were restored).

Ships Papers numbered SP 1-SP 3, bills of lading.

[Decision: part of the cargo condemned, the ship and the rest of the cargo restored 26 March 1748]
