Description

Captured ship: Phoenix of Charleston (master William Wilson).

History: an English ship (300 tons, guns, 30 men), bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Cowes, laden with rice, mahogany and cocoa; taken first on 28 April / 8 May 1745 by the French warship Galatea, retaken on 3/14 May 1745 off the Isles of Scilly by three fishing boats, the Agnis (Jonathan Hicks master), the Blanch (John Sincock master) and the Ann (John Bickford master), and brought into St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.

  • [CP 10-CP 12]: a set of orders for the 'garrison and islanders', examinations of thirteen soldiers and inhabitants on the Isles of Scilly, 8 August 1745;
  • [CP 13-CP 18]: standing and additional interrogatories, five examinations of sailors at Penzance, commissioners' affidavit, 11 December 1745;
  • [CP 19-CP 20]: standing interrogatories, three examinations of sailors at Portsmouth, commissioners' affidavit, 20 December 1745.
