Description

Captured ship: De Post van Hamburgh (master Herman Andreas Paatz).

History: a Hamburg ship (70 Hamburg lasts, 11 men), bound from Brest to Rotterdam, laden with sugar and paper; taken on 7 August 1745 off Dungeness by the privateer Swift (George Hudson commanding), and brought into Deal.

  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation and claim, attestation, brought into court August-September 1745;
  • [CP 9a-CP 10b]: attestation issued by the ruling authorities of Hamburg with translation, letter of attorney with translation, brought into court 23 October 1745;
  • [CP 11-CP 12b]: two attestations issued by the ruling authorities of Rotterdam and Hamburg, translation, brought into court 11 March 1746;
  • [CP 13-CP 14]: attestation and claim, allegation, brought into court March 1746;
  • [CP 15-CP 17]: attestation as to papers, abstracts and translations of the 4 ship's papers in Dutch and German, abstracts and translations of the 5 ship's papers in French and Spanish (all original papers were restored);
  • [CP 18-CP 18c]: allegation with three annexed papers, freight agreement with translation, schedule of goods, brought into court 4 September 1746;
  • [CP 19-CP 27]: papers resulting from examinations conducted in Amsterdam, including a commission, copy allegation with two annexed papers, substitution, five examinations, translation of the examinations, brought into court 26 January 1747;
  • [CP 28-CP 36]: papers resulting from examinations conducted in Hamburg, including a commission, substitution, four exhibits, copy allegation with two annexed papers, eleven examinations, translation of the examinations created in Hamburg, printed bürger oath, translation of the examinations created in London, brought into court 24 February 1747;
  • [CP 37]: allegation, brought into court 16 March 1748.

[Decision: the ship and part of the cargo restored, 15 March 1746; the rest of the cargo condemned, 2 June 1748]
