Description

Captured ship: Prosperous of Folkestone (master James Taught).

History: an English ship (60 tons, 6 guns, 11 men and a boy), bound from Bordeaux or Flushing to Littlehampton, laden with a small amount of tea and brandy; taken on 8/19 September 1745 off Burlingate by the privateer Carlisle (William Owen commanding) on suspicion of smuggling, and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: two releases of interest;
  • [CP 8]: attestation that the Prosperous is a smuggling vessel;
  • [CP 9]: attestation as to papers (some of the ship's papers appear to be missing).

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 3.
