Description

Captured ship: Nuestra Senora de Nazareth y St Luis (master Antonio de Sylva d'Andrade).

History: a Persian East India merchant ship, bound from Sadras to Bengal, laden with silver, rupees and chinaware; taken on 3 August 1747 off Madras by HMS Medway Prize (William Holmes commanding) and HMS Winchester (Thomas Bertie commanding).

  • [CP 1-CP 8]: set of claim, attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Calcutta on behalf of the now deceased Coja Minas de Tzack, Calcutta merchant, including his will;
  • [CP 9-CP 11]: three release of claims;
  • [CP 12]: account of treasure (rupees/silver) removed from the ship, 26 January 1749/50;
  • [CP 13]: decree for restitution of the scheduled rupees, pronounced by a surrogate of Sir Henry Penrice, 1751;
  • [CP 14-CP 16]: attestation as to papers, and two abstracts and translations of the 28 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers, including letters in Armenian translated into Portuguese, and some in Malabar script, numbered SP 1X-5X, 13X-17X (SP 13X and 14X are in the same document); SP 1-20.
