Description

Captured ship: Notre Dame de Grace of Nantes (master Louis Destaritz).

History: a French merchant ship with a letter of marque (300 tons, 16 guns, 45 men), bound from Cap Francois, Saint Domingue to Nantes, laden with sugar, indigo and coffee; taken on 24 June/4 July 1747 about 60 leagues west of Belle Isle by HMS Oxford (Smith Callis commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 10]: two attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 53 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-17, SP 20-SP 53 [no 18 or 19].
