Description

Captured ship: Nuestra Senora del Monte Carmelo of Callao, Peru (master Manuel de Zamora).

History: a Spanish merchant ship (400 tons, 48 men of whom 33 were 'Indians, Mestices [mestizos] or Negroes', 27 passengers), bound from Callao to Valparaiso, Chile, laden with cloth, European goods, tobacco, sugar, indigo and silver; taken on 12/23 September 1741 between the island of Juan Fernandez and Valparaiso by HMS Centurion (George Anson commanding), condemned at sea under a special commission issued to Commodore Anson's expedition, and brought into the Island of Juan Fernandez.

  • [CP 4-CP 5]: allegation on behalf of HMS Tryal and HMS Gloucester who had aided in repairing and manning the Centurion thus enabling the chase and capture of the Nuestra Senora del Monte Carmelo, and additional interrogatories to be conducted on behalf of the same;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 16 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 17.
