Description

Captured ship: Mary Anne (master Jean Baptiste Barthelemy).

History: a French merchant ship, bound from Alexandretta to Marseilles, laden with gold and silver; taken on 16/27 June 1744 in the Channel of Malta by the privateer Duchess Theresa, formerly Princess Amelia (John Jandin commanding), and ransomed.

  • [CP 1]: translation of the ransom bill;
  • [CP 2]: claim of Alexander M Cragh, steward on board the Duchess Theresa, as to the recapture of the Mary Anne by HMS Oxford (Harry Pawlett commanding) on 18/29 June 1744, despite being ransomed and possessing a legal pass to Marseilles, 21 February 1744;
  • [CP 3]: attestation of Albert Schaffer as to Jandin having destroyed all bills of lading and taken no hostage for fear of bad treatment by the French in case of capture, 11 March 1744;
  • [CP 4]: attestation of Jandin and James Bradbury, surgeon on board the Duchess Theresa, as to the ransom bill being signed, with translation and original French ransom bill annexed, 4 October 1744;
  • [CP 5]: translation of a Dutch claim by Amsterdam merchant Johannes de Lover & Sons against HMS Oxford, 20 October 1744, with proofs of ownership of the cargo and a second claim filed on their behalf by their London agent, Abraham Henckelle annexed.
