Description

Captured ship: La Marguerite of La Rochelle (master Charles Guyas).

History: a French merchant ship (200 tons, 14 guns, 34 men, 3 passengers), bound from La Rochelle to Cap Francois, Saint Domingue laden with sea coal, stones, salt, salt beef and linen; taken on 19/30 October 1747 in latitude 40ºN by HMS Centurion (Peter Denis commanding) escorting a convoy, and brought into Portsmouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 10]: one allegation by HMS Centurion for La Marguerite, December 1747; three complex allegations brought into court on 10 March 1748 and one brought in on 22 March 1747 arguing against the alleged joint capture of La Marguerite by the East India Company ships with letters of marque Pelham and Augusta (and Walpole);
  • [CP 11]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 12-CP 13]: attestation as to papers for the ship's papers numbered 11-18 [which are not here], and abstract and translation of the 8 ship's papers numbered 1-8.
