Description

Captured ship: Marquis de Mezière (master Antoine Portier).

History: a French privateer (25 tons, 4 guns, 37 men), bound on a cruise; taken on 25 January/3 February 1748 between Beachy Head and Dieppe by the privateers Duke of Dorset (John Hunt commanding) and Hawk (Richard King commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 12 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 34, many being unused ransom bills.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 5 April 1748]
