Captured goods: Spanish cocoa taken from the Sancta Maria (master Jean Jacques Gerard or Gerrard).
History: a French merchant ship (tartan, with a passenger, a Spanish gentleman disguised in the habit of a common sailor, specifically as a foremast man, by the French captain in order to disguise the Spanish nature of the trade), bound from Corunna allegedly to Genoa but actually to Cadiz, laden with cocoa from the French consul at Corunna; taken on 26 July/ 5 August 1742 off Cape St Vincent by HMS Diamond (Robert Pett commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.
