Captured ship: Mercure (commander Pierre de Tilly Le Pelley).
History: a French warship (900 tons, 16 guns - a 64 gun ship, but now armed en flute as a hospital ship for the Duc D'Anville's expedition to retake Acadia [in French Canada], 281 men - mariners, soldiers, and 17 English prisoners of war: as a hospital ship, the number of men aboard during the voyage naturally changing); separated from the French naval squadron off Acadia by bad weather, and returning to Brest; taken without resistance on 24 November/5 December 1746 at latitude 48°25'’ 14 leagues off Ushant by HMS Namur (Edward Boscawen commanding), and brought into Plymouth.
