Description

Captured ship: Mary and Margaret (master Oudard Paillet or James Hodges).

History: an English [smuggling] ship (fishing sloop, between 15 and 20 tons, deserted by the crew who rowed ashore near Rye), bound from Boulogne, laden with French brandy; taken on 13/24 November 1744 near Rye by the privateer Unity (Robert Harrison commanding), and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 8]: attestation as to papers;

Ship's Paper numbered SP 1 (purchase of the vessel by James Hodges).
