Description

Captured ship: The Louisa (master Petter/Peter Strandberg).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (10 Swedish lasts, 3 men), bound from Uddevalla, Sweden, to Le Havre, laden with pitch and steel; taken on 10/21 May 1745 four Swedish miles from Dieppe by the privateer Sutherland (John Sutherland commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim of the master, Peter Strandberg;
  • [CP 7 –CP 8]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 40 ship's papers [most of these papers were restored].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 6:

  • [SP1- SP 4]: Swedish logs from May 1743-45;
  • [SP 5]: Notebook;
  • [SP 6]: Swedish notebook of arithmetical exercises belonging to the master.

[Decision: pitch and tar condemned, 3 March 1746; appealed]
