Description

Captured ship: Laetitia of Bristol (master William Jackson).

History: an English ship (120 tons, 14 men), bound from South Carolina to Bristol, laden with rice, pitch, tar and hides; taken on 15/26 April 1745 by the French privateer La Grande Biche of St Malo (Nicholas Jourdain commanding) and sent home to St Malo, but retaken on 18/29 April 1745 off the Munster coast of Ireland by the Elizabeth (Daxon commanding) and the London Packet (Terence Ternon commanding) and brought into Cork.

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: three examinations, commissioners' affidavit, wrapper;
  • [CP 3]: attestation and claim of Bristol merchants;
  • [CP 4-CP 5]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 12 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 12:

  • SP 1-SP 3: bill of lading issued in Charleston (damaged), muster roll, ship's pass; all in English;
  • SP 4-SP 5: letter of marque, muster roll; both in French;
  • SP 6-SP 12: letters written on 19 April 1745 [NS] by the privateer's crew of La Grande Biche to their families in St Malo and Dinard.

[Decision: restored paying 1/2 salvage, 10 December 1745]
