Description

Captured ship: Jonge Johannes (master Teunis Kersies Klyn).

History: a Dutch ship (50 lasts, 4 men and a boy), bound from Bordeaux to Dunkirk (or Amsterdam) laden with brandy, wine, vinegar, sugar and cork; taken on 8/19 May 1746 off Ostend harbour by the privateer Eagle (John Bazely commanding) and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim of the master;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 12]: 5 attestations as to papers, abstracts and translations of the 41 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 41 ( SP 16, 17, 20 and 21 were restored).

  • SP 1-SP 15: 15 bills of lading issued at Bordeaux;
  • SP 18-SP 22: 2 French passes, muster roll, 2 customs papers;
  • SP 23-SP 25b: three bound volumes belonging to the captain, each containing information about past voyages and some financial accounts. One paper (SP 25a) found loose inside SP 25 and two quill pens (SP 25b) found inside the same volume;
  • SP 26-SP 34: 9 customs papers from Bordeaux;
  • SP 35-SP 36: 2 blank customs forms in Dutch;
  • SP 37-SP 41: draft cargo manifest, 4 ship accounts with receipts for money paid at Bordeaux.

[Decision: cargo condemned, ship restored, 4 September 1746]
