Description

Captured ship: Die Jungfer Margaretha, Juffrouw Margaretha, or Jungfrau Margaretha (master Hinrich Bielenberg, Billenberg or Bielenger).

History: a Hamburg merchant ship (100 Dutch lasts, 12 men), bound from Bordeaux to Hamburg, laden with sugar, wine, brandy, coffee, indigo, cork, Spanish green [verdigris], and spirits; taken on 18/29 August 1747 between Dover and Calais by the privateer Culloden (Abraham Boxell commanding), and brought into the Downs.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: claim of the master;
  • [CP 7-CP 29]: 40 sets of attestations and claims, with translations;
  • [CP 30]: schedule of goods restored;
  • [CP 31-CP 32]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 65 ship's papers [all but two of these papers were restored].

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 12 and SP 63 only.

[Decision: part of the cargo condemned, the ship and the rest of the cargo restored, 21 November 1747].
