Description

Captured ship: St Johannes, otherwise Joannes or Johann (master Andreas Thomson).

History: a Swedish merchant ship (65 lasts, 4 guns, 8 men, 2 boys), bound from Riga to Oporto, laden with hemp, flax, iron, plank and boards; taken on 8/19 September 1744 off Great Yarmouth by HMS Hawke (Samuel Maisterson commanding) and HMS Tryal (John Stringer commanding), and brought into the River Thames.

Court Papers:

  • [Examinations taken in London, see: HCA 13/90, fos 122, 130-131, 134-136]
  • [CP 1-CP 9]: attestation and claim of the master, 1 November 1744, translations of 6 Dutch papers presented, letter of attorney;
  • [CP 10-CP 11]: attestation and claim of the master, 3 November 1744;
  • [CP 12-CP 24]: 8 sets of attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Stockholm, and brought into court between November 1744 and February 1745;
  • [CP 25]: allegation;
  • [CP 26-CP 28]: attestation as to papers, attestation as to the true translation of the ship's papers, and abstract and translation of the 130 ship's papers, which were all restored.
