Description

Captured ship: St Johannes of Frederikstad (master Lorentz Kleef).

History a Danish merchant ship (70 tons, 1 gun, 7 mariners, 10 passengers) charged with carrying contraband such as butter and beef to a French port (La Rochelle or Le Havre); taken on 28 December 1744 [OS] off the Isle of Wight by the privateer Marlborough (Joseph Southeran commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit, attestation as to papers;
  • [CP 2]: allegation;
  • [CP 3-CP 5]: parchment wrapper, and abstract and translation of the 8 ship's papers, which were restored.

[Decision: cargo condemned, 5 February 1745]
