Captured ship: Hopewell Sloop of Poole (master Richard Lovell).
History: an English merchant ship (40 tons, 11 men and 1 boy before capture, and 8 Spanish captors and 3 of the original crew on recapture), bound from Cork to Trinity, Newfoundland, laden with beef, pork, butter and candles; taken on 16 May 1740 [OS] by the Spanish privateer San Sebastian (Don Paulo de Abis commanding) and retaken on 23 May 1740 by HMS Grafton (John Hildesley commanding) in company with with HMS Russell, HMS Norfolk, HMS Dunkirk, HMS Deptford, HMS Severn, and brought into Plymouth.
