Description

Captured goods: Spanish wool from De Hoop, otherwise Hope Galley or L'Esperance (master Dirk de Lieve otherwise de Leuw or de Leus).

History: Spanish wool taken from a Dutch merchant ship, bound from Alicante, at Villafranca [Villefranche sur Mer] on 24 September / 5 October 1742 by HMS Royal Oak (Philip Vincent commanding), and brought into Nizza [Nice, Savoy].

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: affidavit by the captor, 1743;
  • [CP 2-CP 8]: three notarial lists, with translations, and one translation of a bill of lading, from Genoa, 1743;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: sworn declaration by Lieutenant Richard Dorill of HMS Royal Oak, that the wool had been seized, and that the freight due to the master was to be payed by John Birtles, the English consul at Genoa (signed in the presence of the English Consul at Nice, Gabriel Bonijol), November 1742; and translation, 1745;
  • [CP 11]: allegation of Genoese claimants, 1745;
  • [CP 12-CP 13]: copy of the sentence from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Minorca, October 1744; and translation, brought into court June 1746.
