Description

Captured ship: De Hoop or Die Hoffnung of Danzig (master Conradt Harlak or Harlah).

History: a Danzig merchant ship (30-40 lasts, 4 men, 2 boys), bound from Bordeaux to Danzig and Konigsberg, laden with wine, indigo, prunes, treacle, and Hungary water; taken on 6/17 August 1747 off Boulogne by the privateer Chesterfield (Samuel Gilbee commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim of the master, August 1747;
  • [CP 7]: attestation of the master as to damage by grounding, October 1747;
  • [CP 8-CP 15]: 8 sets, of 12 attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Danzig, Elbing, Ermeland and Prussia, and brought into court in December 1747;
  • [CP 16-CP 17]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 22 ship's papers [all these papers were restored].
