Description

Captured ship: L'Hirondelle (master Pierre Chantot).

History: a French ship (90 tons, guns, 28 men -26 from France, 1 from Scotland and 1 from England), bound from Bordeaux to Saint Domingue, laden with wine, flour, pitch, beef, pork, butter, oil and dry goods; taken on 31 October / 10 November 1744 in latitude 44º by the privateer Prince Charles (Charles Gwynn commanding), and brought into Bristol.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 4]: attestation as to the perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 5]: allegation;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 3 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers:

  • SP A: customs declaration issued at Bordeaux;
  • SP B: french pass;
  • SP C: letter of marque.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 15 January 1745]
