Description

Captured ship: L'Hermine of Boulogne (commander Antoine Bouchard).

History: a French privateer (40 tons, 14 guns, 54 men, 52 of them French, 2 Dutch), bound from Boulogne on a cruise; taken on 12/23 October 1746 by HMS Jamaica (Marriot Arbuthnot commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 24 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers:

  • SP 1-SP 2: letter of marque, muster roll;
  • SP 3-SP 5: instructions and ordinances;
  • SP 6-SP 7: customs papers issued at Boulogne;
  • SP 8-SP 11: copies of commisions of war;
  • SP 12-SP 23: blank ransome bills;
  • SP 24: note in French.
