Description

Captured ship: L'Hercule of Bordeaux (master Jean Pierre D'Aignan).

History: a French ship (320 tons, 16 guns, 34 men, 3 passengers - 2 French and 1 Portuguese), bound from Cayenne to Bordeaux, laden with cocoa, roucou, coffee, sugar, indigo; taken on 18/29 July 1746 near Bordeaux by HMS Sheerness (Molineaux Shouldam commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation that the ship was leaking;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations of the 27 ship's papers;

Ship's Papers:

  • SP 1-SP 4: bills of lading issued in Cayenne;
  • SP 5-SP 6: muster roll, French pass;
  • SP 7-SP 11: customs documents from Bordeaux and Cayenne;
  • SP 12-SP 13: letter to a merchant in La Rochelle, receipt;
  • SP 13-SP 17: permits issued at Cayenne for sailors to take service on the ship;
  • SP 18: letter to a merchant at La Rochelle;
  • SP 19-SP 20: two extracts from the registry of the Admiralty of Cayenne;
  • SP 21: receipt for lighthouse fees;
  • SP 22-SP 26: certificate to join a convoy, two receipts, an invoice and a customs declaration;
  • SP 27: customs declaration from another ship, the Saphir.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 4 September 1746]
