Description

Captured ship: L'Hareng Sors or Sauret, formerly Manuel's Fishing Boat (commander Jean Baptiste Coilliot).

History: a French privateer (12 tons, 22 men), bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 8/19 June 1745 by HMS Jamaica (James Webb commanding) and brought into the Downs.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 25 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers, numbered SP 1-SP 25, but lacking SP 10:

  • SP 1-SP 3: muster roll, parchment and paper copy letters of marque;
  • SP 4-SP 5: copy of a treaty concluded between France and the Netherlands, customs declaration;
  • SP 6: captain's letter of credit;
  • SP 7-SP 8: instructions;
  • SP 9: advice for using medicine on board the ship;
  • SP 10: regulations concerning prizes (wanting);
  • SP 11-SP 13: duplicate instructions, copy letters of marque;
  • SP 14-SP 21: eight blank ransom bills;
  • SP 22: filled-out ransom form for the ship Good Return, Peter Paul and Gabriel Lawrence owners;
  • SP 23: signalling instructions;
  • SP 24: passport issued from Dieppe;
  • SP 25: customs clearance issued at Dieppe.
