Description

Captured ship: La Françoise of Isle Dieu [Île d'Yeu] (master Philippe Nolleau).

History: a French merchant ship (bark, 45 tons, 5 men), bound from Nantes to Dunkirk, laden with wine, brandy, indigo and cocoa; taken on 27 March / 7 April 1744 off Beachy Head ["within sight of the White Cliffs of England"] by HMS Anglesea (John Brett commanding), and brought into London.

Court Papers:

  • [Examinations taken in London, see: HCA 13/90, fo 17]
  • [CP 1-CP 2]: standing interrogatories, two examinations, commissioners' affidavit, wrapper made from part of an old house inventory (unrelated);
  • [CP 3]: attestation and claim;
  • [CP 4-CP 20]: set of attestations, affidavits and translations, with exhibits, including two attestations by the ruling authorities of Dordrecht;
  • [CP 21]: allegation;
  • [CP 22-CP 23]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 13 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 13.

[Decision: condemned 4 May 1744, except 4 casks of indigo restored as Dutch ally]
