Description

Captured ship: La Fortune (master Jean Hinard). Formerly the English Severn.

History: a French merchant ship (140 tons, 24 men), bound from Louisbourg to Bordeaux, laden with codfish, oil and sugar; taken on 4/15 January 1745 in latitude 46° by the privateer Dragon (James Seaborn commanding) and brought into Bristol.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 3 ship's papers marked 'A', sent in 18 February 1745;
  • [CP 10-CP 11]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 4 ship's papers sent in 19 March 1745.

Ship's Papers:

  • [SP 1-SP 3]: three papers sent in 18 February 1745, all marked 'A';
  • [SP 4-SP 7]: four papers sent in 19 March 1745, originally numbered 1 to 4.
